Who We Are

Tin Roof is run by a group of dedicated and qualified professionals who are passionate about water, both at home and abroad.

Leigh Bird, B.Sc., B.Ed., M.A., Tin Roof Program Designer. Leigh has over a decade of experience as an outdoor environmental educator and a Masters in Environmental Education & Communication. In addition to working with youth here in Ontario, Leigh has authored educational resources regarding marine awareness in conjunction with the Belize Ministry of Education.

Chris-Beth Cowie, Tin Roof Youth Outreach Coordinator. In her 4th year of International Development at the University of Guelph, Chris-Beth is an active leader through the U of G’s Peer Helper Program, Canada World Youth, Rotary International and her ongoing volunteer roles with a variety of community groups.

Leah Hagreen, B.Sc., Tin Roof Director. With a background in environmental consulting and program management, Leah’s experience and skills inform her passion for education, both at home and abroad.

David Harvey, B.A., M.Ed., Tin Roof Director. A high school teacher for nearly 20 years with a Masters of Education, David has led a variety of international student exchanges and taught in over a dozen countries.

Michael Hays, B.A., M.B.A., Tin Roof Treasurer. With extensive international business experience working in finance with Barclays and CIBC, Michael brings solid fiscal management to Tin Roof.

Craig Johnson, Ph.D., Tin Roof Director & Vice President. An Associate Professor of International Development & Political Science at the University of Guelph, Craig has worked with the Canadian, UK and Swiss International Development Agencies on numerous aid projects.

John Millar, B.A., M.A., Tin Roof Executive Director. With extensive experience in international development education and non-profit management, John has overseen a variety of international education programs, working with schools at home and abroad.

Emma Ruby-Sachs, L.L.B., Tin Roof Legal Advisor. A writer and lawyer, Emma studied law at the University of Toronto and the University of Chicago. She has practiced class action and criminal law, writes political commentary for 365gay and the Huffington Post, and has varied non-profit experience.

Russell Smith, Tin Roof Web Designer. Senior Multimedia Designer for PwC Canada and Owner / Sr. Web Designer of ourrug unltd.

Anne Thomson, B.A., B.Ed., Tin Roof Director. A certified teacher in Experiential Education with varied non-profit experience, Anne’s diverse career in education has always focused on working with and inspiring youth.

Michael VanHuisseling, B.A., B.Ed., Tin Roof Director. With a background in leadership education and outreach program development, Michael is a certified teacher with non-profit experience across a number of sectors.
